The trilogy does not ask the reader to reject established measurements. It asks whether the same measurements can support a different physical explanation.
Novels first
These are novels, not physics textbooks.
There is not a single equation in the trilogy—not even E=mc2. The scientific questions unfold through characters, conversations, discoveries and consequences.
No knowledge of physics is required to read the books. Readers who want to examine the reasoning, sources and technical details can continue into the Physics companion.

How it grew
The first book opened a question it could not contain
Between the Beats began as a novel about a person who notices that the received signal and the distant event are too easily treated as one thing. The question was scientific, but its consequences were personal: what happens when recognition asks for a cleaner, safer version of the thought that earned it?
The second novel follows the same distinction into time. If an observer changes its relation to a travelling messenger, has the completed event changed—or only the report and the coordinate system used to reconstruct it?
The third book moves from the observer to the receiver itself. It asks why the same electromagnetic field is given different explanatory nouns across the spectrum, and whether the decisive structure lies not in a travelling particle picture but in the organised matter that responds.

Cosmology, propagation and expansion
The first book explores questions of cosmology, the propagation of light and the apparent expansion of the universe. It asks whether observed effects such as redshift, distance and the limits of observation might be explained in another way—while preserving the measurements on which current models are based.
Through Jan’s life, the question becomes inseparable from recognition, family and the institutions that decide which uncertainties are safe to publish.
Central question: Can the same cosmological observations support a different explanation?
Novel Two

Motion, observation and the speed of light
The second book examines relative motion, the observation of light and the difference between an event and the signal that reports it. It asks whether special relativity correctly describes the measurements, but assigns their transformation to the wrong physical object.
Jan must decide whether Einstein solved the wrong problem—and how to make that argument without pretending that every remaining question has already been answered.
Central question: Did Einstein solve the wrong problem?
Novel Three

Emission, detection and the photon
The third book explores how electromagnetic waves are created and what physically happens when matter detects them. It asks whether the photon is necessary as a physical explanation of the measured phenomena—or whether emission and detection can be understood through electromagnetic waves and the organised response of matter.
The discovery moves from one electron to the many-electron material system that constrains, absorbs, emits and sometimes releases it.
Central question: Do the phenomena we measure require the photon as their physical explanation?
